Geomatics defined
Geomatics is defined as the branch of science that deals with the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data relating to the earth’s surface.
But the common issue is: “What is a good measure of asset or object?”. Each data collection method has its pros and cons and that is why Honey Badger Analytics blends methods together to leverage the pros and minimize the cons.
Drone
Drones are a great way to collect or inspect large objects or areas. In addition, they provide imagery or other datasets that the customer needs in a relatively short time.
Con:
Flight times are usually under two hours, regulations are still set, and the range is limited to a few square miles, followed by significant data processing times depending on machines or equipment.
Mobile Mapping / Scanning
Capture large amounts of the total data environment quickly across large areas and can be adjusted as accurately as needed. The collection moves quickly, looking up instead of down, capturing things missed by aerial.
Con:
Mobile Mapping processing takes time, and machines can’t see through things. With the limitation of the line of sight (LOS). When an obstacle inhibits LOS, it creates a shadow and comes across as dark spots in the point cloud like in the video to the right.
GPS Collection
Based on the accuracy, GPS accommodates to meet the client’s needs. Ranging from survey grade to GIS grade, GPS offers the ability to collect the exact data effectively and efficiently.
Con:
Only a capture of the one asset/object, no representation of the environment around it. It takes more time to conduct and can become problematic with weather events and tree canopy. (Also, the potential for user error is much higher)
